Devadoothan: Mohanlal’s Old Mystery Thriller will not be re-released in that region

The renowned Malayalam film Devadoothan is slated for a theatrical re-release. Mohanlal, who portrayed the main character, will once again captivate global audiences on the big screen starting July 26. Despite this, there are speculations that the movie will not be screened in the GCC due to unspecified causes. Following the 1995 hit Spadikam, this is the second film featuring the Malayalam superstar to be re-released.

Sibi Malayil, the director, has announced the re-release of the film during a press conference. He has assured the media in a statement that a revised version of the movie will make its debut in theaters. With the exception of Gulf nations, it is also expected to be screened on large screens outside India. This is likely due to censorship issues. Surprisingly, the movie faced a complete commercial flop upon its release in 2001. Nevertheless, once it was broadcasted on television and released on DVD, the audience showered it with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Mohanlal elaborated on the reasons behind the disappointing theatrical run of the film in 2001 during a press conference held on July 9 in Kochi. “Devadoothan was way ahead of its time. This could explain the lack of interest it received in theaters. It’s possible that the audience back then didn’t find it convincing,” he stated.

The mystery thriller features Jaya Prada, Janardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayalakshmi, Murali, Jagadish, and Vineeth Kumar in pivotal roles. The plot centers around Vishal Krishnamoorthy, who was expelled from college despite being innocent of playing the musical instrument Seven Bells. This unjust incident shatters his bright future. Years later, the college principal invites him to oversee a musical performance. Vishal decides to unravel the mystery of the Seven Bells, convinced that it holds the key to his redemption.
