In an achievement that is very large in impact Pakistan captain Babar Azam has overcome the legendary India captain, MS Dhoni to become the top run-scoring captain in the history of the T20 World Cup. Azam’s feat came to the fore despite Pakistan’s early exit at the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Captaincy has brought out the best in Babar Azam. He scored 549 runs from 17 innings. He has gone past score of 529 by MS Dhoni. The former Indian captain secured this in 29 innings. It is notable achievement for Azam. It is a display of consistency and excellence in the T20 format. Trailing behind is New Zealand’s captain Kane Williamson. He needs two more runs to beat Dhoni’s score. With New Zealand next playing Papua New Guinea Williamson has a good chance of gaining several places.
Pakistan’s Babar Azam scored unbeaten 32 off 34 balls in the match against Ireland in Florida. He did his part. His team could not progress from the Super Eight stage. In that same game Shaheen Shah Afridi took the Player of the Match accolade for a terrific all-round display. This marked his third award across all T20 World Cups. He equals Umar Gul, former fast bowler in the most POTM awards by Pakistani player in the tournament. His father-in-law and former captain of Pakistan, Shahid Afridi leads with four POTM awards to his name.
Pakistan have concluded their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the group stage. Placed third, they gathered four points in four matches. They achieved two wins and two losses. India and the USA made it through to the Super Eight from Group A. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team will now play Afghanistan on 20 June.
