Anurag Kashyap talks about Animal and the hatred in Bollywood against it

Sandeep Reddy Vanga marked his entry into Bollywood as a director with the Shahid Kapoor-led film Kabir Singh, which turned out to be a massive success at the box office. Despite its commercial success, the movie faced backlash from some viewers due to its depiction of toxic behavior. Subsequently, Vanga released his second Hindi film, Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor. While Animal also achieved great success, it received criticism for its portrayal of graphic violence and misogyny. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has now stepped in to defend Animal, pointing out the double standards of those who are condemning the film.

During a recent interview, Anurag Kashyap, who is currently promoting his upcoming show, Bad Cop, expressed his thoughts on the film Animal. The director emphasized his preference for honesty above all else and praised Sandeep Reddy Vanga for embodying this quality. Kashyap stated that unlike many individuals in the industry who put on a facade, Vanga remains true to himself, making him a commendable figure. According to Kashyap, the former type of people who pretend to be someone they are not are even more detrimental. However, Vanga stands out as an honest man. Anurag further expressed that the action sequences depicted in Animal had such a profound impact that the similar scenes in previous movies now appear artificial. He pointed out the hypocrisy of individuals, stating, “Those who condemned Animal, hurled abuses, and attempted to boycott the film, later ended up watching it, despite being aware of its content, only to subsequently denounce it again.”

Previously, Anurag Kashyap posted a heartfelt tribute to Vanga, accompanied by a photograph of the two together. In his post, Kashyap expressed his admiration for Vanga, acknowledging that he currently faces much misunderstanding, judgment, and criticism as a filmmaker. However, Kashyap views Vanga as incredibly sincere, open, and kind-hearted. Regardless of others’ opinions, Kashyap was determined to meet Vanga and discuss his film, which he had watched twice, and Vanga graciously answered all of his inquiries. Upon its theatrical release, Animal proved to be a major success, grossing over ₹900 crore globally. The movie features a talented cast, including Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, and Tripti Dimri. Helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film delves into the toxic relationship between a father and his son.
