In an emerging trend in the film industry, Ravi Teja’s action-packed thriller ‘Eagle’ is set to make its digital debut on Amazon Prime and ETV Win just three weeks after its theatrical release on February 9th. Following in the footsteps of Venkatesh Daggubati’s milestone 75th film, ‘Saindhav,’ which found its way to Prime Video shortly after hitting theaters, the move signals a growing reliance on OTT platforms for post-release success.
Despite the initial anticipation surrounding ‘Eagle,’ the film faced mixed reviews upon its theatrical release. Directed by Karthik Ghattamaneni, the stylish action flick struggled to meet box office expectations and concluded its theatrical run on a subdued note. The narrative challenges were evident, with the first half of the film featuring scenes that went overboard in building up the protagonist, leading to an impact on both the runtime and the overall audience engagement. Too many characters vying to elevate the central figure also contributed to the film’s lackluster performance.
The shift towards early OTT releases is a clear indication of the influence these platforms wield, thanks to their willingness to pay substantial amounts for exclusive streaming rights. While producers capitalize on these deals to salvage profitability after a lackluster box office showing, it comes at the cost of traditional exhibitors and distributors who heavily rely on theatrical releases. This trend reflects a changing viewer preference, with audiences increasingly opting for the convenience of watching films on their own screens rather than making the trek to theaters. ‘Eagle’ is scheduled to soar into the digital realm on March 1st, available for streaming on both Amazon Prime and ETV Win.
