In 2022, a noteworthy trend emerged on social media platforms as a section of users initiated the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ movement before the release of major films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Liger, and Brahmastra. The sentiment gained traction, affecting the box-office business of some of these high-budget productions. Actor Suniel Shetty has recently addressed the trend, questioning the current whereabouts of the trolls and characterizing it as a passing phase. Speaking with news agency ANI, Shetty mentioned that the film industry experienced a challenging period but emphasized that it was a phase they eventually navigated through.
Suniel Shetty, who shared his perspective on the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ trend during a conversation with ANI, expressed that the movement was a viral trend causing additional challenges for the already struggling industry. Shetty acknowledged that the hashtag and momentum seem to have dwindled, and he considered it as a phase that the industry rode out. He noted that just a handful of individuals sporadically posting ‘#BoycottBollywood’ on social media no longer holds the same significance, questioning the existence of the hashtag now.
In a previous interaction with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in January, Suniel Shetty raised industry grievances and urged the CM to address the negative impact of the viral trend on box-office revenues. Despite the challenges posed by the movement, films like Brahmastra managed to perform well at the box office in 2022, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Suniel Shetty is set to appear in the upcoming film “Welcome to the Jungle,” alongside Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, and Raveena Tandon.
