AB de Villiers Questions Dhoni’s Decision to Leave CSK Captaincy

Former RCB star AB de Villiers did not mince words when reacting to MS Dhoni’s surprise decision to step down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings ahead of their IPL 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While working as a cricket analyst, de Villiers called it a “huge mistake” for Dhoni to hand over the leadership reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“To me, MS Dhoni is five guys in the team as captain. I am not sure that will work together,” de Villiers stated bluntly. “I do think it’s a mistake. What happened last time is similar. I feel CSK’s all about MS Dhoni’s leadership. And his captaincy will be a mistake.”

Despite de Villiers’ skepticism, the newly appointed Gaikwad seemed unfazed, revealing Dhoni had been grooming him for the role since last year. However, Dhoni’s legendary captaincy pedigree and the team’s consistent success under his leadership makes de Villiers’ concerns understandable. Only time will tell if the transition to a new skipper proves wise or ill-advised for the perennial CSK contenders.
