Typically, the Malayalam film industry is not renowned for producing high-grossing films at the box office. Although their movies possess exceptional writing and technical finesse, their reach in terms of box office numbers has been limited. However, this scenario has changed significantly. As we enter 2024, Malayalam cinema is experiencing a surge in popularity. With the release of several box office blockbusters such as Bramayugam, Premalu, Manjummel Boys (a new all-time blockbuster), Aadujeevitham, Aavesham, and Varshangalkku Shesham, the Malayalam film industry has amassed over Rs 750 crore in box office collections.
This year, the film industry achieved a new milestone by delivering three films grossing over 100 crore rupees: Premalu, Manjummel, and Aadujeevitham. These films have elevated the status of Malayalam cinema in the southern region and across India as a whole. Previously considered a niche film industry, Malayalam cinema has emerged as an unexpected victor, setting the box office ablaze this year. While mainstream industries like Bollywood and Tollywood are struggling to produce significant box office hits in 2024, an unlikely champion has emerged and is dominating the industry.
Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham is all set to become another 100 Cr Grosser from Mollywood. In the latter half, Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s most anticipated L2: Empuran(Lucifer’s Sequel) will be released, and it is expected to create many records at the box office. Mammotty is also coming up with an action flick called Turbo, set to be released on June 13th.
